A call history is a timestamped record of outgoing telephone calls made from a specific line or account. Each entry logs the dialed number, duration of the call, date, and time. In legacy systems and contemporary VoIP installations alike, this data is stored in the switching equipment or billing database and made available to the account holder, typically through a web portal, paper statement, or device interface.

The practical purpose of call history in electrical engineering and telecommunications is twofold: billing and diagnostics. The network operator uses call logs to generate charges based on call duration, destination type (local, long distance, international), and service tier. Engineers use the same logs to troubleshoot connection problems, verify call routing through the network, and identify patterns of use that may indicate faults or fraudulent activity.

Variants and scope across network types

In Public Switched Telephone Networks (PSTN), call history is generated at the exchange level and typically retained for 60 to 90 days before archival or deletion. Mobile networks store call records on the carrier's core network infrastructure; handset call history is a separate, limited log stored locally on the device itself, usually capped at several hundred entries. IP-based systems (SIP trunks, softphones, hosted PBX) log calls within the VoIP platform, often with granular metadata including codec, jitter, packet loss, and call completion status.

The presence and detail of call history varies by jurisdiction due to data retention laws. European carriers must comply with GDPR restrictions, typically storing metadata for 12 months at most. In North America, regulations are less prescriptive, allowing carriers wider latitude in retention periods. The engineering team must therefore design the logging and purge routines to match both the legal environment and the operational requirements of the account.

Common issues in call history systems include storage overflow when logs are not properly archived, timestamp drift if the system clock is not synchronized (particularly problematic in distributed VoIP networks), and gaps in the record caused by database corruption or network partition events. Accurate call history depends on synchronized timekeeping across all network nodes and robust transaction logging at the point of call completion.
