In forestry, the canopy is the continuous or near-continuous layer of foliage and branches formed by the crowns of mature trees, typically 20 to 40 metres above the forest floor depending on species and site quality. It is the uppermost stratum of a forest stand and the primary interceptor of sunlight, rainfall, and wind. Understanding canopy structure and density is central to timber yield prediction, habitat assessment, and forest management planning.
Canopy density is measured as canopy closure or crown cover, expressed as a percentage of ground area shaded by tree crowns when viewed from above. A closure of 70 to 100 percent indicates a closed canopy; below 40 percent, the forest is considered open. Foresters estimate this by eye using densiometer plots or hemispheric photography, methods that directly influence harvest scheduling and regeneration strategy. Dense canopies suppress understory vegetation and reduce sapling recruitment; open canopies allow light penetration and earlier growth of replacement trees.
Canopy structure and timber value
Canopy architecture varies by forest type. In even-aged stands, trees reach similar heights and form a single, uniform canopy layer. In uneven-aged or natural forests, multiple layers exist: an upper canopy of dominant trees, a mid-canopy of intermediate crowns, and a lower canopy of suppressed stems. This layering affects both the volume and quality of timber recoverable; dominant trees grow straighter and larger, while mid and lower canopy trees are often bent, knotty, or unmerchantable.
Canopy gaps, created by windthrow, disease, or logging, are critical to forest dynamics. A gap of 100 to 400 square metres permits sufficient light for shade-intolerant species to establish; gaps smaller than this tend to fill with shade-tolerant species or pioneer vines. Gap size and frequency influence whether a forest regenerates naturally or requires replanting. Timber cruisers and forest planners routinely map canopy gaps to estimate potential growth and plan felling rotations.
The term derives from the fabric canopy stretched over a bed or a tent: a protective covering. In forestry, it entered common usage in the 20th century as aerial photography and mensuration became standard tools. Related terms include overstory (the canopy proper), understory (shrubs and small trees beneath), and crown, which refers to the foliage mass of an individual tree rather than the collective layer.
