hardwood: dense timber from broad-leaved trees

Hardwood comes from deciduous or evergreen broad-leaved trees, not conifers. Oak, maple, walnut, teak, and ash are common hardwoods; pine and spruce are softwoods. The terms refer to wood density and cellular structure, not actual hardness, some hardwoods are softer than some softwoods. What matters is that hardwoods have a complex internal structure with vessels, rays, and fibers that take longer to grow and produce denser wood suitable for furniture, flooring, and structural work.

Hardwoods are typically slow-growing, taking 40 to 100 years or more to reach harvestable size depending on species and climate. This long rotation period makes hardwood timber more expensive than softwood. Tropical hardwoods like teak and mahogany are prized for durability and appearance but face sustainability issues; temperate hardwoods like oak and beech are more readily regrown in managed forests. The slower growth means tighter growth rings and more uniform grain, which gives hardwood its reputation for stability and workability.

In trade, hardwood is often sold by species and grade rather than generic category. Grading systems assess defects, color variation, and usable width. A board of No. 1 Common red oak will command a different price than No. 2 Common. Moisture content is critical: hardwood must be dried to 6 to 12 percent depending on end use, or it will warp, split, or cup after installation. This drying can take months to a year, adding cost and lead time.

Where hardwood sits in the supply chain

Hardwood lumber reaches end users through sawmills, kilns, and distribution yards. A log arrives at the mill, is debarked, squared, and sawn into rough boards. These rough boards go to a kiln for controlled drying, then to a planer mill where they are surfaced to final dimensions. Defects are sorted out or used for lower grades. From there, lumber dealers, woodworking shops, and large retailers stock and sell to contractors, manufacturers, and craftspeople.

The name hardwood reflects the Janka hardness scale, which measures resistance to denting and wear, though the scale is imperfect. Oak measures around 1290 on the Janka scale; teak around 1000; white ash around 1320. What builders and craftspeople actually care about is stability, workability, appearance, and durability in service. Hardwood's density gives it good wear resistance and dimensional stability, making it the default choice for flooring, stair treads, and fine furniture where softwood would dent or move too much.
