A capel is a hard, crystalline rock composed chiefly of quartz, schorl (black tourmaline), and hornblende that forms in the country rock adjacent to tin and copper lodes. Miners encounter it as a distinct band or zone within the walls of a vein, and its presence signals proximity to payable ore. The rock is tough to drill and breaks with a characteristic fracture; it does not itself carry significant metal values, but its appearance tells an experienced miner they are working the right ground.

The capel owes its name and composition to the particular fluids and temperatures that precede ore deposition. As hydrothermal solutions advance through country rock, they alter the surrounding minerals and precipitate new ones, including tourmaline, before the main ore stage begins. This makes capel a gangue marker, not ore itself, but an indicator more reliable than color or surface texture alone. The tourmaline component is especially diagnostic: schorl forms under specific conditions of boron availability and temperature that coincide with metal mineralization in the southwest English tin fields and similar districts elsewhere.

Capel occurs most commonly in granite and metamorphic rocks where tin and copper lodes develop. The thickness varies from a few inches to several feet, and sometimes multiple capel bands frame a single lode. Miners used its presence to guide underground development and to judge whether they were approaching the lode itself or moving away from it. In areas of poor surface exposure, the capel revealed in trial shafts confirmed the strike and dip of the vein before large-scale extraction began.

The hardness and interlocking crystal structure of capel made it troublesome to work. Hand tools and early powder charges often wasted effort breaking through capel rock before reaching the softer ore body beyond. Modern drilling and blasting have reduced this friction, but the rock still requires robust bits and sharp picks. Its resistance to weathering means capel outcrops can be spotted in old spoil heaps and abandoned workings long after the ore has been extracted.

Capel is seldom of interest to the miner as anything but waste. The tourmaline, quartz, and hornblende lack economic value in most contexts, and the rock's hardness makes it uneconomic to extract for any secondary use. Its true value lies in what it teaches: a geologist or foreman who reads capel well knows the structure of the lode and the likely position of ore within it.
