presplit

To shape the outcome of an explosive blast by forming cracks in advance.

presplit: controlled fracture before detonation

Presplitting is the practice of drilling and loading a line of closely-spaced holes with low-density explosive or detonating cord ahead of the main blast. This creates a weak plane, or presplit line, that guides the shock wave and defines the final boundary of the excavation. When the primary charge detonates, rock breaks cleanly along this predetermined plane instead of fracturing randomly outward into adjacent material that you wanted to keep standing.

The presplit holes are typically drilled at 0.5 to 1.5 meter spacing along the perimeter of the blast zone, often at a slight angle outward to create a continuous plane. They are loaded with small charges, sometimes linear detonating cord alone, or with low-strength explosives like ANFO at reduced density. The presplit line is detonated microseconds before the main blast, allowing the fracture to propagate to the free face and establish the break plane.

Variants and Applications

In quarry work and civil excavation, presplitting protects standing pit walls, nearby structures, and final surfaces. In underground mining, it controls the shape of stope walls to reduce overbreak and improve stability. Smooth wall blasting, a related technique, places charge holes closer together and uses more powder to smooth the perimeter; presplitting is gentler and does less damage to rock left in place. Both methods cost more per ton of rock removed than conventional blasting, but they save money on rehauling and wall support.

Failure to presplit, or poor presplit design, results in jagged overbreak where the main blast tears back beyond the intended boundary. This wastes material, complicates loading, and destabilizes remaining walls. Overcharged presplit holes can also cause cut-off, where the presplit line fragments prematurely and closes before the main shock arrives, negating its benefit.

The term comes directly from the action: splitting the rock before the main event. In blasting nomenclature, presplit is distinct from trimming (detonating a perimeter charge after the main blast to smooth walls) and from buffering (using low-density powder near the boundary to reduce shock). All three are elements of precision blasting, the discipline of shaping blast outcomes for economic and safety gain.
