cast-on: how you get the first row of loops onto the needle
A cast-on is the foundation row of loops that forms the starting edge of any knitted fabric. Before you can knit a single stitch, you must secure a series of loops along the needle in a way that anchors them so they will not slip off during knitting. The cast-on does this job: it creates an initial row of loops, each sitting over the needle shaft, ready to be worked into the first course of stitches.
Industrial and hand knitting use different cast-on methods suited to their speed and fabric outcome. The long-tail cast-on requires only the working yarn and creates a chain-like selvage edge; it is reliable and produces elastic fabric suitable for garment edges. The German twisted cast-on (also called Old Norwegian) creates a tighter edge with more structure, useful for ribbed fabrics. Cable cast-on uses two needles and builds more slowly but yields a robust, finished-looking edge. In machine knitting, cast-on is often mechanical: yarn is fed across all active needles in a latch hook frame, creating loops in one stroke, then a presser bar holds them in place before knitting begins.
The cast-on edge determines how an article behaves. A loose cast-on allows cuffs and necklines to stretch freely; a tight cast-on resists stretching and is used where shape retention matters. The number of cast-on stitches must match the desired width of the finished piece. Mistakes in casting on cannot be easily corrected without picking out and restarting. In production settings, cast-on failures cause line downtime: if loops are dropped or the tension is uneven, the resulting edge ripples, and the knitted length will be misshapen or develop runs.
The term reflects the physical action: you are "casting" loops of yarn "onto" the needle, as though throwing or securing them. Industrial operators speak of cast-on counts (the number of active needles engaged) and cast-on tension (the force applied to anchor each loop). Handworkers describe cast-on methods by their mechanics: the long-tail involves holding yarn in a loop between thumb and finger, the cable method uses two needles to link new loops, the provisional cast-on uses waste yarn that is later unraveled to free live stitches.
Quality cast-on requires consistency. Uneven tension produces stitches of different sizes along the edge; too loose and the edge unravels, too tight and it constricts the fabric or causes puckering in the first few rows. In hosiery and seamless knit apparel, cast-on is critical because the edge is visible and must be comfortable against the skin. In blankets or industrial textiles where the edge is sewn into a seam, precision is still required because an irregular edge makes stitching difficult and weakens the final join.
