lab dip: small dye sample to check color before production
A lab dip is a small batch of fabric, typically 100 to 500 grams, dyed under controlled conditions to preview how a full production run will accept and display a particular dye formula. The dyer uses the same dye chemicals, water chemistry, temperature profile, and timing planned for production, but at minimal scale. The goal is to lock in the color specification before committing thousands of kilograms of material and hours of machine time.
The lab dip process begins with selecting the target fabric construction and fiber content that will be used in production. The dyed sample is then sent to the client or to quality control for approval against a color standard or swatch. If the match is acceptable, the formula moves forward. If not, the dye recipe is adjusted and another lab dip is run. This iterative sampling is far cheaper than correcting color on a full production batch, which can mean discarding hundreds of kilograms or attempting costly overdyeing.
Lab dips reveal problems that theory alone cannot predict. Different fiber lots, even from the same supplier, can show slight color variation under the same dye recipe because of differences in moisture content, previous chemical treatment, or pH response. Water hardness and alkalinity at the production facility may differ from the lab location. Dye exhaustion curves, temperature ramps, and hold times that work on 200 grams may not translate perfectly to a 1000-kilogram kettle. The lab dip forces these variables to be tested at a manageable cost.
Common variants and standards
Most textile mills maintain in-house dye labs equipped with small-scale pressure vessels, heating controls, and a library of dye samples and standard fabrics. A laboratory beaker dip, run on 10 to 50 grams in a small pot, is even quicker but less representative of kettle conditions. Some mills also prepare a strike-off, a small sample dyed immediately after the color approval, to confirm the formula before the full production run begins. The term lab dip can also apply to samples run on yarn before weaving, particularly in custom or small-batch work.
The textile trade expects lab dips as routine practice. A dyer without a lab function risks reputation loss from color mismatches. Clients, especially in fashion and home furnishings, specify lab dip approval as a contractual requirement before fabric is produced. The cost of a lab dip runs from 50 to 200 US dollars per color, depending on the dye chemistry and testing thoroughness, which is negligible against the cost of reworking or scrapping a bad production batch.
