The cazo process is a historical metallurgical technique for extracting metal from ore by boiling crushed material in a salt solution, typically inside a large copper or iron vessel called a cazo (Spanish for cauldron). The salt solution acts as a flux, helping to dissolve and separate valuable metals from gangue and base minerals. The method was developed in Spain and Spanish America, particularly for treating silver ores and copper-bearing materials during the colonial period.

In practice, finely ground ore was mixed with brine or salt water and heated in the cazo vessel. The salt lowered the melting point of certain metallic compounds and improved their solubility or mobility in the molten mass. Once the solution cooled, metal-rich slag or precipitate could be separated from waste material. The process required careful temperature control; too little heat failed to melt the ore properly, while excessive heat could damage the vessel or waste fuel. Fuel consumption was substantial, as large quantities of wood or charcoal were needed to maintain high temperatures for hours or days.

The cazo process was eventually displaced by more efficient methods, particularly the patio process (or American process) for silver ore, which used chemical amalgamation with mercury. The patio process proved faster, required lower temperatures, and produced higher recovery rates. However, the cazo process remained in use in some remote or economically constrained operations into the nineteenth century, especially in regions where mercury supplies were limited or expensive.

The process illustrates a broader category of historical ore beneficiation techniques that relied on heating and flux chemistry before modern flotation and chemical leaching became standard. Understanding such methods is valuable for archaeologists and historians studying mining sites, industrial development, and the transition from medieval to modern metallurgical practice. Remnants of large cazo vessels and furnace structures can still be found at abandoned Spanish and Latin American mining sites.
