try-off: checking a mold before it runs production

A try-off is a trial casting or forming run made from a new or reworked mold to verify its dimensions, clearances, and material flow before committing to full production. The mold is fitted to the press or casting machine, tested under actual operating conditions, and the resulting parts are measured and inspected against the specification. This catches design errors, tool wear, and build mistakes before thousands of scrap parts roll off the line.

In die casting and forging, a try-off typically produces 10 to 50 sample parts, depending on the size and complexity of the mold. Each part is checked for dimensional accuracy, surface finish, flash or parting line visibility, and structural integrity. Bearing surfaces and seal pockets must clear properly; metal thickness in ribs, webs, and bosses must fall within tolerance. The operator also watches for mold-filling issues: cold shut lines, misruns, or blow-holes that suggest vent placement or metal temperature problems.

In injection molding, the try-off serves the same function for plastic parts. In sheet metal stamping, it is called a die try or tryout. Press settings, cycle times, and hydraulic pressures are fine-tuned during a try-off. Gate location, runner sizing, and hold-pressure curves are adjusted based on what the first few parts reveal. Mold temperature control systems are brought to steady state and validated.

Problems found during try-off are almost always cheaper to fix than those found in production. A tight bearing bore discovered on sample 2 might mean drilling or honing a few cavities; the same defect on cavity 16 after 5,000 parts have shipped means customer returns, rework, and lost reputation. Try-off is also the moment when setup documentation is created: press tonnage, mold temperature setpoints, cycle time, part count per cavity, and packing pressure are locked in so the next operator gets it right.

The term itself is straightforward: one tries off the mold, running it off the machine in a controlled trial. In some shops the term is used loosely to mean any short run or test batch, but in formal tooling language a try-off is specifically the first validation run of a new or modified mold, performed and documented before release to production.
