A chaff cutter is a powered machine that reduces long straw, hay, or other dried plant material into short pieces typically 6 to 25 millimetres in length. The machine consists of a hopper feed mechanism, rotating cutting blades or a cylinder with fixed knives, and a delivery chute. Feed stock passes through either hand-crank, electric motor, or belt-drive mechanisms that rotate the cutting assembly at speeds between 400 and 1500 rpm depending on the model and desired cut length.

The two main designs are the flywheel cutter and the cylinder cutter. Flywheel machines use heavy rotating discs with knife blades projecting from the rim; material fed between the blades gets sheared against a stationary bed knife. Cylinder cutters employ a rotating drum fitted with multiple knives that cut against a fixed counter-blade as material moves through. Electric models dominate in larger operations, while hand-crank versions remain in use on smaller farms and in regions with limited power supply.

Why the cut matters

Chopped fodder has practical advantages: it reduces storage volume by up to 40 percent, prevents selective grazing where animals pick out nutritious pieces and waste coarse material, and mixes more uniformly with grain or mineral supplements in prepared rations. Uniformity also aids digestibility in ruminants. Operators adjust cut length by changing blade spacings or feed speed to suit the intended use and animal type.

Maintenance centers on blade sharpness and alignment. Dull blades produce ragged, uneven cuts that can jam the machine and require excessive feed pressure; properly sharpened blades cut cleanly and reduce power draw. Misaligned blades cause uneven cutting and accelerated wear. Material moisture content matters: hay that is too green (above 30 percent moisture) tends to compress and clog the machine rather than cut cleanly, while bone-dry material produces fine dust that creates respiratory hazard and fire risk in enclosed spaces.

The chaff cutter sits at the intersection of animal husbandry and small-scale milling. It bridges the gap between field harvest and feed preparation, making it essential equipment on livestock operations ranging from small dairy farms to large grain-feed operations. Industrial feed mills use larger, continuous-feed models as one stage in multi-machine processing lines.
