A chaffy ear of corn is one where the kernels have failed to fill out properly, leaving gaps and voids between them. Instead of kernels sitting tightly packed against one another in neat rows, chaffy ears have shriveled or partially developed kernels that rattle when you shake them. This creates the husked ear's characteristic light, hollow feel and poor volumetric density compared to a well-filled cob.

Chaffiness occurs when environmental stress hits the plant during kernel development, typically in the weeks following pollination. Heat stress, drought, insufficient nitrogen, or premature senescence of the stalk can all cause kernels to abort or starch poorly. In some cases, kernel abortion follows incomplete pollination of the ear's florets. The severity ranges from a few scattered chaffy kernels on an otherwise sound ear to completely aborted ears with virtually no harvestable grain.

Impact on harvest quality and yield

Chaffy ears reduce both bushel weight and harvestable grain volume per acre. A combine will still attempt to thresh them, but the low kernel density means more cob material passes through the grain handling system. When kernels are sparse and loose, they separate more readily from the cob during threshing, leading to kernel loss at the fan and higher chaff content in the grain tank. Moisture content in chaffy ears also tends to be higher and more erratic, complicating storage decisions.

The term derives directly from its resemblance to chaff: the husks, cob fragments, and other non-grain matter that historically had to be winnowed away from threshed grain. A chaffy ear is one that produces excessive chaff-like material relative to actual harvestable kernels. Seed buyers and grain elevators dock prices for chaffy corn because cleaning costs rise and test weight suffers.

Scout fields in the milk and dough stages to assess whether chaffiness is scattered or widespread; isolated chaffy ears may reflect localized pollination issues, while whole field chaffiness points to systemic environmental or hybrid sensitivity problems. Hybrid selection, planting date, and pest management all influence susceptibility.
