A characteristic is the visual signature of a navigational light, coded into its color, flash pattern, and timing so that a mariner can identify which lighthouse or beacon she is looking at from the water. Because hundreds of lights mark coastlines and shipping channels, each must be unmistakably different. The characteristic allows a navigator to fix her position and confirm she is on the correct approach or course.

The elements that make up a characteristic are strictly defined. Color (red, green, white, or occasionally yellow) is one component. The flash pattern comes next: a single flash, multiple flashes in quick succession, or a steady glow. The period, measured in seconds, governs how long the entire cycle takes before it repeats. A light might show, for example, a white flash every 10 seconds, or a red group of three flashes every 12 seconds. These timings are precise and documented in navigation charts and light lists so that mariners can confirm identity even in poor visibility.

Characteristics are recorded in official publications such as national light lists and on nautical charts using a shorthand notation. A light might be listed as Fl(2)W.10s, meaning a group of two white flashes with a 10-second period. This notation allows a navigator to look up the known characteristics of lights in her area and match them against what she observes. If the timing or pattern fails to match, she knows something is wrong, either with her observations or with the light itself.

Why characteristics matter in practice

Mariners rely on characteristics to navigate safely at night or in fog when visual landmarks are invisible. A fishing vessel approaching a harbor in darkness cannot rely on seeing the outline of the lighthouse itself, so the coded light pattern becomes the sole reliable reference point. Confusion between two nearby lights with similar characteristics has contributed to maritime collisions and groundings, which is why coastal authorities maintain strict standards for light distinctiveness.

Modern electronic navigation using GPS has not eliminated the need for characteristic knowledge. Paper charts and coastal pilots still list characteristics, and they serve as a backup when electronic systems fail. Lighthouse keepers and port authorities maintain these lights and their patterns as legal obligations, and any deviation or failure must be reported immediately to mariners via navigational notices.
