A charactron is a cathode ray tube designed to display alphanumeric characters and symbols directly, rather than building them up from dots or lines. The tube contains a stencil mask with shaped openings corresponding to letters, numerals, and punctuation. When the electron beam passes through the correct opening, it projects that character onto the phosphor screen in a single sweep, making it far faster than raster scanning for text output.

The character selection mechanism is the critical difference from standard CRTs. A set of deflection coils or beam-steering circuits directs the electron beam to the right aperture in the stencil, then additional deflection positions the character at the desired location on screen. This two-stage deflection, combined with the fixed character shapes, meant that charactrons produced sharp, uniform letterforms without the computational overhead required to rasterize text.

Where and when they were used

Charactrons found their main application in display terminals and early computer output devices during the 1960s and 1970s. They were especially valuable in environments where high-speed text display mattered more than graphics capability, such as air traffic control systems, military command centers, and data terminal applications. Their speed advantage disappeared once raster-based displays became standard and processing power made software character rendering practical.

The term itself combines character with the tube suffix used in many CRT type names, echoing terms like iconoscope and oscillitron. The technology is now entirely obsolete, replaced by matrix displays and vector refresh systems, but charactrons remain historically significant as a bridge between mechanical character printers and modern digital displays.
