chattermark: vibration scars that spoil your finish

A chattermark is a series of closely spaced grooves or ridges left on a workpiece surface during machining, caused by periodic vibration between the tool and the part. Unlike a smooth feed mark, chattermarks appear as a regular wave pattern, typically spaced from 0.5 to 5 millimeters apart depending on the vibration frequency. They are cosmetic defects that indicate instability in the machining setup and usually require rework or scrapping of the affected area.

Chattermarks arise when the tool briefly loses contact with the workpiece during each vibration cycle. As the tool bounces or vibrates, it cuts material intermittently rather than in a continuous pass. This produces the characteristic rippled or scalloped surface. The frequency and depth of the marks depend on the natural resonance of the machine tool, spindle speed, feed rate, and the rigidity of the setup. High-speed operations and slender workpieces or long tool overhangs are most susceptible.

Sources and Mitigation

Common causes include worn spindle bearings, insufficient workholding clamping pressure, tool chatter from inadequate tool geometry, and improper speeds and feeds for the material. Older machines or those with poor foundation bolting tend to chatter more readily. Prevention requires checking machine condition, increasing clamp force where possible, shortening tool overhang, reducing cutting forces through slower feeds or higher speeds, and using chip breakers or tool coatings designed to damp vibration.

Chattermarks differ from other surface defects: feed marks are uniform and expected; tool marks from a dull tool show torn rather than cut material; chatter gives a periodic wave. On critical surfaces such as bearing journals or seal fits, chattermarks can be unacceptable because they create stress concentrations and may harbour contaminants. Some finishing operations, such as honing or lapping, can remove shallow chattermarks, but deep ones require rework from a larger stock size.
