check: a grid pattern that catches defects
In manufacturing, a check is a deliberate grid pattern of alternating colors or contrasting finishes applied to a surface, usually fabric or a metal workpiece. The pattern consists of small squares arranged in rows and columns, each square occupying a defined area. The purpose is visual: to make surface irregularities, defects, and dimensional variations immediately obvious to an inspector or operator. A ripple, wrinkle, sag, or deviation in flatness will distort the grid and become visible at a glance.
Checks are most common in textile manufacturing and metal stamping. In fabrics, the weave itself may create the check pattern through alternating colored warp and weft threads. In metalworking, a check pattern is often applied as a temporary paint or ink grid during quality inspection, or it may be a permanent knurled or embossed texture on the finished part. The grid spacing is standardized to the application: textile checks might be 0.5 inch or 1 inch square, while stamped metal checks can be as small as 0.1 inch to catch fine surface defects.
Why checks matter in inspection
The human eye is poor at detecting gradual distortions in a featureless surface, but excellent at spotting breaks in a regular pattern. A check grid exploits this strength. When a sheet metal stamping has oil canning (an oily sheen caused by elastic buckling), the check squares will appear to bulge and shrink, revealing the defect instantly. In fabric, a check pattern makes it easy to see if selvage edges are straight, if the weave is uniform, or if the cloth has been stretched unevenly.
Checks also serve a practical dimensional function. By counting grid squares across a measured distance, an inspector can calculate the scale of a part without calipers, and can document shrinkage or stretching numerically. A 10-inch span that should contain twenty 0.5-inch squares but contains only nineteen indicates a 5 percent shrinkage.
The term check derives from the appearance of a checkerboard. It is distinct from other industrial pattern applications: a cross-hatch is used for grip or identification marking, a diamond knurl for ergonomics, and a hash pattern for anti-glare properties. In quality control documentation, "check pattern" may be abbreviated as "check" when context is clear, though care should be taken not to confuse it with "check" meaning inspection or verification.
