A cheeser is a small, lightweight spool or bobbin onto which yarn is wound during the finishing stages of textile production. Unlike the larger cones or packages used earlier in the spinning process, a cheeser holds a limited length of yarn, typically a few hundred meters to a few thousand meters depending on yarn count and fiber type. The package is designed to be convenient for final inspection, testing, dyeing, or immediate use in weaving or knitting operations.

The name "cheeser" derives from the cylindrical shape of the wound package, which resembles a wheel of cheese. The spool itself is usually made of cardboard, plastic, or compressed paper and may have flanges at each end to contain the yarn. A properly wound cheeser presents a neat, even surface so that yarn can be unwound smoothly without tangling or snagging.

Cheesers are particularly common in worsted wool production, where they serve as holding packages between the final twist-setting stage and shipment to customers. They are also used in the finishing of cotton and synthetic yarns. The small size makes them manageable for handling through laboratory equipment, color-fastness testing, or wet processing like scouring and dyeing. In some mills, cheesers feed directly into package-dyeing equipment where the wound package itself enters the dye liquor.

A cheeser differs from a cone (which is typically larger and plastic, designed for mill-to-mill trade) and from a cop (a much smaller package wound on a spindle during spinning itself). The cheeser occupies a middle ground: larger than a cop but smaller and more flexible than a full cone. This makes it ideal for short runs, quality control, or supply to smaller manufacturers.

Issues with cheesers most often involve uneven tension during winding, which creates soft spots or loose areas in the package, or contamination during storage if the cardboard absorbs moisture. Proper storage in a controlled humidity environment is important to maintain yarn quality. The cardboard tube itself must be rigid enough to support the yarn weight without collapsing, yet disposable enough to be cost-effective for single-use packaging.
