A double-pointed needle (DPN) is a straight knitting needle with a sharp point at each end, typically 4 to 6 inches long, used in sets of four or five to knit tubular fabrics in the round without seaming. The working yarn is held on one needle while stitches are distributed across the remaining needles, which rotate as work progresses. This setup lets a knitter complete seamless tubes: socks, sleeves, hats, gloves, and the tops of sweaters.
DPNs come in standard sizes from US 000 (1.5 mm) to US 15 (10 mm) and larger, matching the range of circular needles. Common materials include bamboo, wood, metal (steel or aluminum), and plastic. Bamboo and wood needles grip yarn slightly more than metal, making them preferred for slippery yarns and by knitters prone to dropped stitches. Metal needles are faster for experienced workers and less prone to splintering. The needles are typically sold in sets of four, though five-needle sets exist for working with very long circular sections or in continental knitting styles where one needle is held idle.
When and why they fail
The main technical limitation is that DPNs work best for tubes no wider than about 5 to 8 inches in circumference. Beyond that, the working section of fabric becomes unwieldy and stitches spread too far across the inactive needles, risking dropped stitches and uneven tension. Bamboo needles split or fray at the points with heavy use. Metal needles can bend slightly under pressure and develop burrs that catch yarn. The transition between needles often causes visible horizontal bars or tension irregularities if the knitter does not maintain consistent gauge and pull firmly on the first stitch of each new needle.
DPNs remain standard in hand knitting despite the rise of circular needles and magic loop techniques because they are cheaper to buy, require no learning curve for knitters already familiar with straight needles, and sit flat when work is in progress, making them easier to handle on public transport or in confined spaces. Many sock and glove patterns assume DPN construction because the tool was the historical standard before circular needle technology matured.
