chipped: ECU firmware modified for performance gain
A chipped engine has had its Engine Control Unit (ECU) reprogrammed at the firmware level to alter fuel delivery, ignition timing, boost pressure, or other parameters that the manufacturer deliberately restricted. The goal is almost always to increase power output, though some chips are tuned for fuel economy or different driving characteristics. The term comes from early modifications that involved physically replacing or reprogramming the EPROM chip on the ECU circuit board; modern work often happens through the OBD-II diagnostic port.
Performance chips typically increase horsepower by 10 to 50 percent depending on the engine type and fuel quality, with diesel engines showing larger gains than gasoline equivalents. A modest gasoline remap might add 15 to 25 horsepower; a diesel truck chip can add 80 to 150. The cost ranges from £300 to £1,500 depending on the shop and platform. Most tuners work from baseline maps they have developed for each model, then adjust for specific hardware already on the vehicle: turbocharger size, fuel injectors, air intake, exhaust.
A chipped vehicle can suffer accelerated wear if the tune ignores mechanical limits of the engine. Stock pistons, rods, and gaskets are engineered to safe margins; a poorly aggressive map that pushes combustion pressure too high will cause knocking, ring failure, or head gasket breaches within months. Warranty voids immediately, and dealers can often detect the modification through ECU code history even if the chip has been removed. Insurers may refuse claims on a modified engine.
Variants exist for different goals. A rolling road tune uses a dynamometer to measure actual output and refine the map in real time. A file tune uses pre-made calibration files optimized for that engine code. OBD tuning connects via the diagnostic socket, while boot tuning requires opening the ECU case. Some chips include flex fuel capability, allowing the engine to run on ethanol blends for higher boost without detonation.
Chipping is distinct from bolt-on modifications like cold air intakes or exhaust systems. Those changes cannot reach full potential without a tune: the ECU still runs its factory fuel curve, leaving power on the table. Conversely, a chip alone on a stock engine is safer than a chip paired with aggressive hardware upgrades. The trade uses "chipped" as shorthand, though "tuned" or "mapped" are equally correct and sometimes more precise.
