Initialism of commercial vehicle

CV: any truck, van, or bus built for hire or trade

A commercial vehicle, or CV, is any motor vehicle registered and used primarily for the transport of goods or passengers as a business activity, rather than private use. This spans everything from a small van operated by a tradesperson to articulated lorries weighing 40 tonnes or more. The distinction matters legally, financially, and operationally: CVs carry different insurance, are subject to tachograph rules, require specialist maintenance schedules, and operate under different tax and licensing regimes than private cars.

The CV category includes rigid trucks (single chassis with load bed), articulated units (tractor unit plus semi-trailer), vans (integral cargo area), minibuses, and coaches. In many jurisdictions, the threshold is vehicles over 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR), though some nations set different limits. Light commercial vehicles, or LCVs, occupy a grey zone around this boundary: a van on a car platform might weigh 2.5 tonnes and blur the line between private and commercial duty.

Operating constraints and the driver interface

CVs are subject to strict regulations on driving hours, rest periods, and vehicle checks. In Europe, tachographs record speed and driver activity continuously. Payload limits, axle weight distribution, and brake performance are heavily regulated because of the damage larger vehicles can inflict. Operators must maintain detailed maintenance records; failure to do so can result in vehicle prohibitions or operator fines. Driver training and certification requirements are more stringent than for private vehicles, and many fleets employ dedicated fitters to manage the heavy wear and tear.

The economics of CV operation turn on fuel efficiency, downtime, and asset utilization. A small van operator might clock 30,000 to 50,000 miles annually; a haulage company runs larger fleets on continuous shifts. Fuel consumption, tyre wear, transmission longevity, and brake pad life are calculated per mile and per tonne carried. Roadworthiness tests (MOTs in the UK, comparable schemes elsewhere) are mandatory and more frequent than for cars. A single brake failure on a laden articulated vehicle can be catastrophic, which is why CV maintenance sits at the sharp end of safety culture.

The term CV is shorthand used by operators, regulators, insurers, and spare parts suppliers. You will encounter it in fleet management software, repair manuals, and regulation documents. It is distinct from light commercial vehicle (LCV) and heavy goods vehicle (HGV), though the boundaries shift by region and regulation. Understanding whether a vehicle falls into the CV bracket determines everything from the workshop it needs to the license the driver must hold.
