A visual illusion in which a regular movement seems to pause the first time it is observed.

chronostasis: the eye's lag before motion registers

Chronostasis is the brief perceptual freeze that occurs when your eye first catches motion: the moving object appears to pause for a fraction of a second before resuming normal speed. In optical and imaging work, it matters because it affects how human operators perceive time-stamped events, how cameras and sensors capture transitions, and how fast-moving processes are interpreted on screen.

The phenomenon occurs in the retina and visual cortex, where the nervous system holds the initial visual frame slightly longer than it actually persists. When you glance at an analog clock's sweeping second hand, it appears stationary for roughly 100 to 150 milliseconds before the motion becomes apparent. This is not a failure of the eye itself, but a feature of how the brain saccades, or jumps the eye between fixation points, and then backdates the visual information to create the illusion of continuous motion.

Where it matters in the shop

High-speed imaging systems and motion-capture setups must account for chronostasis when synchronizing events with external triggers or human observation. An operator watching a rapid manufacturing process on a monitor perceives events out of their true sequence because of this lag. Digital displays refreshing at 60 Hz or 120 Hz can amplify or mask the effect depending on the content frame rate and the specific motion being observed.

Chronostasis is most pronounced in peripheral vision and during saccadic eye movement. It becomes less noticeable when motion is smooth and sustained, but sharp or sudden changes in position trigger it. For quality assurance, metrology, and process monitoring, understanding this illusion prevents misattribution of timing errors to equipment when the delay is actually neurological.

The term derives from Greek chronos, time, and stasis, standing still. It is distinct from apparent motion, which is the perception of movement between static images, and from motion blur, which is optical smearing on the sensor or film itself.
