A circumferentor is a brass surveying instrument designed to measure horizontal angles in the field. It consists of a flat circular disc, typically 6 to 8 inches in diameter, with degree markings engraved around its perimeter and an index arm (or alidade) that rotates at the center. The entire assembly is mounted on a staff or tripod and oriented by compass, allowing surveyors to record the bearings of distant objects relative to magnetic north.

The instrument operates on a simple principle: the surveyor sights along the index arm toward a target, then reads the degree marking where the arm intersects the graduated circle. Because the disc itself is aligned to cardinal directions via a built-in compass needle, each bearing measurement is absolute rather than relative, making it valuable for rough reconnaissance surveys and boundary work where speed matters more than the highest precision.

Variants and limitations

Unlike a theodolite (which measures angles between two sightings via a telescopic eyepiece and vernier scales), the circumferentor relies on open sights and direct visual reading of coarse graduations, typically in half-degree or degree increments. This makes it prone to errors of 15 to 30 minutes of arc under field conditions. Some versions include a small level and tripod socket; others are hand-held. The compass needle can be unreliable near iron or electrical interference, and parallax error from misaligned sighting is common.

The name combines the Latin circumferentia (circumference) and ferre (to carry or bring), reflecting its circular design and portable nature. It remained standard equipment for American land surveyors through the 19th century and persisted into the early 20th century for quick angle shots, even after transits and theodolites became available. Today it appears mainly in historical surveying references and museum collections.

Circumferentors occupy a middle ground between the surveyor's compass (which gives only bearing, not angular separation between two objects) and the transit or theodolite (which measures angles with much greater accuracy). For rough cadastral surveys, construction layout, and mine surveying where portability and speed outweighed precision, the circumferentor proved durable enough to remain in use well after more accurate instruments were invented.
