A natural or artificial object used as a reference point.

In surveying, a monument is a physical object placed at a specific location to mark a point of known position, typically a boundary corner, survey station, or reference point for future measurements. Unlike the architectural sense, these monuments are working infrastructure: they must be durable, recoverable, and clearly identifiable in the field. A monument establishes a permanent record of position that can be relocated and verified by subsequent surveyors, often decades or centuries later.

Monuments take several forms depending on permanence and use. A stone monument might be a granite post set 3 to 4 feet into the ground with the top carved to show the survey point, common for property boundaries. Iron pipes, brass caps, or concrete markers serve the same purpose but with different lifespans and visibility. Artificial monuments are deliberately installed; natural monuments exploit existing permanent features like rock outcrops or large trees, though these are less reliable since they can be damaged or removed without warning.

Finding and verifying monuments

Surveyors spend considerable time searching for monuments, especially along old property lines where markers may be buried under soil accumulation, overgrown vegetation, or construction fill. A needle detector can locate buried iron or brass monuments. Once found, a monument must be verified against its recorded description: the type of material, depth of set, any inscriptions, and its spatial relationship to other monuments. If a monument has been disturbed or is missing, surveyors must either reset it according to the original record or establish a new monument at the calculated position, which then becomes the working reference.

The term 'monument' itself comes from its role as something that stands as evidence or witness to a surveyed fact, much like a historical monument records a past event. In legal boundary disputes, the existence and position of a properly documented monument often becomes controlling evidence, since courts recognize that a monument set in place by an original survey carries strong presumption of accuracy. This is why replacement or repositioning of a monument requires formal documentation and often legal notice.

Monument networks underpin the National Spatial Reference System, with benchmarks and control points marked by cast-iron disks or bronze tablets set in bedrock or concrete footings. These higher-order monuments are surveyed to greater precision and serve as datum points for local surveys. Property boundary monuments, by contrast, are typically set only to the precision required by the original survey, often the nearest foot or tenth of a foot, though modern surveys may reset them with higher accuracy.
