A clack door is the hinged or bolted cover plate that seals the valve chamber of a reciprocating pump, typically found in mining dewatering and slurry operations. It allows access to the clack valve (also called a check valve or one-way valve) without breaking down the entire pump housing. The door sits flush with the pump casing and must seal tightly under pressure to prevent leakage.
These doors are almost always cast iron or ductile iron to match the pump body. A gasket, traditionally made of rubber or cork composition, sits between the door and the casing face. The door is held in place by studs, bolts, or (in older equipment) a hinged pin arrangement. Size varies with pump displacement: a small centrifugal booster pump might have a clack door 4 inches across, while a large reciprocating mine pump could have one 12 inches or more.
Maintenance and failure
Clack doors are opened when the check valve becomes stuck, leaks, or requires cleaning. Sediment, scale, and corrosion products accumulate on the sealing surfaces over time, especially in acidic mine water or slurries containing abrasive solids. A worn or damaged gasket is the most common source of weeping leaks around the door perimeter. The door face itself can pit or crack if it sits idle for extended periods without protection.
The term comes from the noise of the internal check valve mechanism, which clacks back and forth as pressure pulses move through the chamber. Older pump hands would listen for that sound to diagnose whether the valve was working. A silent clack valve usually meant it was stuck closed. The door's function is purely maintenance access; the actual pumping and one-way flow occurs at the valve seat inside, not at the door seal itself.
