dram: the coal miner's workhorse cart
A dram is a small, low-slung cart designed to run on wooden or iron rails underground in coal mines. It typically held between 8 and 12 hundredweight of coal, though capacity varied by colliery and region. The dram sat close to the ground on small wheels, often just 12 to 18 inches in diameter, which allowed it to fit through the narrow roadways hewn from the coal seam. Pit ponies or, later, electric motors hauled loaded drays up the incline toward the shaft.
The term itself derives from Scottish dialect, where "dram" meant a small amount or portion, by extension applied to a small cart. Regional variations existed across British coalfields: the word was standard in Scotland and northern England, while southern pits sometimes used "tram" or "corf." By the late 19th century, iron wheels had largely replaced wooden ones, and fixed axles gave way to swiveling couplings that made handling easier in tight spaces.
Wear, failure, and working conditions
Friction between wheel and rail caused rapid wear on both; foundries supplying pit iron had to maintain tight tolerances. Rust and corrosion from moisture and coal dust shortened the usable life of an unpainted dram to perhaps five to seven years of heavy use. The carts suffered frequent derailments on uneven roadway, and repairs had to be made underground by pit carpenters. Empty drams were returned downslope by gravity or cable systems, creating a continuous cycle that demanded careful track maintenance.
Drams remained in use in British collieries well into the 20th century, though by the 1950s conveyor belts and larger mechanized wagons began to displace them. The technology was simple and rugged enough that it changed very little in its essential design across 150 years of mining. Its decline marked the end of an era when small-scale, animal-powered underground haulage gave way to industrial-scale extraction.
