clean feed

A clean feed is an output signal derived from a mixing console that contains all active input channels except one designated source. In practice, if a console has six microphone inputs and you create a clean feed that excludes input 3, that output will carry inputs 1, 2, 4, 5, and 6 at their current fader levels.

The primary use is preventing feedback and echo in two-way communication systems. When talent or a speaker needs monitoring but must not hear their own voice returned to them, you send a clean feed instead of the full mix. This is essential in remote interviews, broadcast talkback systems, and stage monitor feeds. Without it, the person hears themselves delayed and distorted, making speech nearly impossible.

Clean feeds are created either through dedicated matrix outputs on larger consoles or by subtractive mixing on auxiliary buses. A matrix mixer accepts multiple input sources and allows the operator to include or exclude each one independently on every output. Some consoles have a mute group that temporarily removes one channel from all outputs; a clean feed is more permanent and channel-specific. The excluded channel can be swapped by reassigning which input the system denies to that output.

The term 'clean' means uncontaminated: the output is clean of that one source. In broadcast, this is sometimes called a 'mix-minus' feed because technically you are subtracting one element from the full mix. The excluded channel is often the one that needs to hear the clean feed, creating a closed loop without self-reference.

Failure to use a clean feed in feedback-prone environments causes squealing, echo, and temporal smear that renders communication unusable. It is not optional in professional two-way setups; it is the minimum requirement for clarity. Most field productions and broadcast facilities keep at least one clean feed routed and ready before talent arrives.
