The part of a harvester or combine which both sieves out large impurities such as rocks and blows out light impurities such as chaff.

The cleaning shoe is the final processing station on a combine harvester where separated grain is cleaned before storage. It sits downstream of the threshing and primary separation systems and consists of two main working components: a reciprocating sieve deck and an air stream. The sieve removes stones, lumps of earth, and other heavy foreign material that would damage the grain or gum up downstream equipment. The air current, generated by a fan, carries away chaff, light weed seeds, and dust.

Most cleaning shoes use a two-deck configuration. The upper deck has larger openings, typically 6 to 10 millimeters depending on the crop, and catches the heaviest trash. Material passing through falls onto a lower deck with smaller apertures, usually 2 to 4 millimeters, which allows properly sized grain kernels through while blocking finer debris. Both decks oscillate back and forth at speeds between 400 and 600 cycles per minute, shaking trash toward the rear while grain slides forward toward the discharge chute.

The air stream speed is critical and must be tuned to the crop being harvested. Too little air and chaff will pass through with the grain, reducing purity and making the delivered product worth less. Too much air can blow out light varieties of seed grain or unripe kernels. Fan speed is usually controlled by an engine-driven belt or, on newer machines, an infinitely variable pulley. Operators adjust fan speed by feel and by watching the chaff stream exiting the machine; well-adjusted air creates a visible trailing plume but little loss of good grain over the sides.

Common problems and wear

The sieve decks wear steadily from contact with abrasive soil and stone particles. Holes enlarge after several seasons, allowing increasingly finer material through. Many operators replace decks annually during off-season service. Imbalanced oscillation, caused by worn bearings or bent frame members, creates uneven grain flow and dead spots where trash accumulates. A plugged cleaning shoe, where wet or finely divided material builds up in the openings, forces operators to stop and manually clear it, a common frustration during harvest under high-moisture conditions.

The cleaning shoe's efficiency directly affects the grain's marketability. Wheat, barley, and oat buyers apply strict standards for foreign material and damaged kernels. A poorly tuned cleaning shoe can mean the difference between a premium price and a substantial dockage charge. For this reason, many farmers practice test cleaning during early harvesting, running grain samples through the combine and into a grain grader to verify the cleaning system is working before moving into full-scale cutting.
