In die cutting and stamping, a clickable material is one that resists permanent deformation when a blade or punch passes through it. After the cut is made and the tool withdraws, the material attempts to return to its original shape or thickness rather than remaining compressed or creased at the wound edge. This behavior is characteristic of elastic materials with low plastic deformation: rubber, certain plastics, felt, cork, and leather all exhibit clickability to varying degrees.
The term comes from the audible snap or click that occurs when the material springs back against the die or blade immediately after cutting. On rigid dies, you literally hear the material ping as it releases the elastic strain. This rebound is why clickable stock requires different die design than brittle materials like paperboard or vinyl, which accept a cut and hold it.
Why clickability matters in production
When material is too clickable, the blade or punch struggles to cut cleanly through the entire thickness. The elastic recovery can lift the bottom portion of the material away from the cutting surface, leaving a connected tag or a partial cut. Conversely, materials with low clickability (like rigid PVC or cardboard) require sharp tooling but hold the cut cleanly. Die makers account for clickability by adjusting blade angle, punch pressure, and the clearance between punch and stripper plate.
Clickable materials are common in gasket manufacturing, die-cut foam insulation, rubber seals, and fabric stamping. The characteristic that makes them clickable, elasticity, is often the same property that makes them valuable for sealing or cushioning. Understanding a material's clickability helps predict how clean the cut edges will be and whether additional finishing, like edge trimming or deflashing, will be necessary.
