COE: a truck with the driver sitting over the engine

A cab over engine truck places the driver's compartment directly above or immediately forward of the engine, rather than behind it. This configuration compresses the distance between the front axle and the back of the cab, making the overall vehicle shorter for the same cargo bed length. The driver sits high and forward, typically 3 to 4 feet above the road surface, giving direct visibility of the hood and bumper.

COE trucks became common in the 1960s and 1970s, particularly in urban delivery and regional hauling where length restrictions limited access to loading docks or tight warehouse yards. A typical COE might measure 25 to 32 feet from bumper to rear axle, compared to 35 to 45 feet for a conventional cab-behind-engine layout carrying the same cargo. This saved 8 to 12 feet of wheelbase, a decisive advantage on city streets and in facilities with short aprons.

The design carries real trade-offs. Engine access is poor: major service often requires tilting the entire cab forward on hydraulic hinges, a procedure that takes an hour or more and leaves the driver area exposed. Heat and noise from the engine compartment reach the cab more directly, and the elevated seating position, while improving forward sight lines, reduces stability in high-wind conditions and makes backing up more difficult. Ride quality suffered in early designs because the cab sat closer to the drive axles and suspension compliance was compromised by the tight geometry.

Variants emerged to address these limits. Some makers (notably Volvo and Scania in Europe) integrated sleeper berths above the engine, creating a compact long-haul platform. Others used turbochargers and aftercoolers rather than larger displacement engines to reduce under-hood volume. Tilting-cab designs became standard on surviving models, allowing technicians to access the engine bay without full disassembly.

COE production peaked in North America in the late 1970s and declined sharply after 1985 as interstate highways became the dominant freight corridor and length limits relaxed in many states. Conventional cab-behind-engine trucks offered better ergonomics, easier maintenance, and lower total cost of ownership on long routes. COE trucks remain in use for refuse collection, concrete mixing, and local delivery in Europe and Asia, where urban congestion and older infrastructure still reward short overall length. In North America, the type is now confined to specialty applications and used equipment markets.
