Money shifting is a transmission error in manual-shift vehicles where the driver mistakenly engages a lower gear instead of the intended higher gear during acceleration. The engine suddenly experiences a sharp increase in revolutions per minute as the lower gear ratio forces the crankshaft to spin faster, often causing a violent jolt through the drivetrain and an audible mechanical protest from the engine. This happens most frequently during high-speed upshifts when the driver miscounts gears or misjudges the lever gate, particularly in older vehicles with less precise shifter mechanisms or in newer cars where the driver is still learning the shift pattern.

The term "money shifting" earned its name because the consequences are expensive: repeated instances cause accelerated wear on engine bearings, pistons, and piston rings due to over-revving. Synchro rings in the transmission can also suffer damage if the driver forces the shift, and clutch wear accelerates sharply if the clutch is not fully disengaged during the misshift. On high-powered engines or during racing conditions, a single money shift can cause catastrophic engine damage, including bent valves, cracked cylinder heads, or complete internal failure.

Money shifts occur most easily in vehicles where gears are adjacent in the shift pattern, such as a 5-speed or 6-speed transmission where third and fourth gears are close to each other. Drivers downshifting under hard braking may also accidentally shift down two gears instead of one if they move the lever quickly without attention to tactile feedback. Poor visibility of the shift knob, worn shifter bushings that allow excessive lateral play, or driver fatigue all increase the risk of this mistake.

Prevention relies on deliberate, controlled shifting with clear awareness of current gear and target gear before moving the lever. Many modern manual transmissions include mechanical stops or rev-matching technology that helps prevent over-revving during downshifts, though these do not eliminate the risk of accidentally selecting the wrong gear. Some racing drivers use sequential gearboxes or paddle shifters specifically to reduce the mechanical possibility of money shifting, since the shift gate is eliminated and only one gear change per stroke is possible.
