A cog joint is a woodworking connection where a projecting tenon on the end of one beam sits into a notched socket in an adjoining piece, typically where two beams meet at right angles. The projection, called the cog or tooth, bears directly against the shoulder of the receiving beam, transferring vertical loads without relying primarily on fasteners or adhesive. This makes it especially valuable in timber framing, where heavy roof trusses, floor joists, or wall plates meet posts or beams.
The joint works by mechanical interlock. The cog (the projecting tenon) is cut on the end of the incoming beam, while the receiving beam has a corresponding notch or mortise. When assembled, the underside of the cog rests on the shoulder created by the notch, creating a bearing surface that can support substantial compression loads perpendicular to the grain. The depth of the cog typically ranges from one-third to one-half the beam thickness, and the length of the projection varies with load and span, but rarely exceeds the full width of the incoming beam.
Cog joints appear in several forms depending on configuration and load direction. A single cog fits one beam into one notch; a double cog has projections on opposite sides of the beam to sit into notches on opposite faces of the receiving member. The joint can be reinforced with wooden treenails (dowels), metal bolts, or straps, depending on the load case and structural code requirements. In modern heavy timber construction, bolts or lag screws are often added through the cog to resist uplift and shear.
Common failures and limitations
Cog joints can fail if the notch is cut too deep, removing too much material from the receiving beam and creating a weak section. Splitting often occurs along the grain at the corners of the notch, especially in dry timber or under repeated loading. Moisture movement can cause the joint to develop gaps if the wood shrinks unevenly across the grain. The joint also transfers stress concentrations at the corners of the notch, making careful layout and sharp tool work essential.
The term cog derives from the tooth-like appearance of the projection. The joint is standard in covered bridge construction, timber-frame houses, and barn framing, where it has been used for centuries. It remains common in contemporary heavy timber structures because it is easier to inspect and repair than buried mortise-and-tenon work, and it allows for straightforward assembly in the field without requiring tight hand-fitted tolerances.
