Ripping is the process of cutting wood parallel to its grain, dividing a board lengthwise into narrower pieces. Unlike crosscutting, which severs the grain fibers perpendicular to their direction, ripping tears through the cellular structure along the wood's length. This fundamental distinction matters because grain-parallel cuts require different saw tooth geometry, feed rates, and physical effort than crosscuts.
A ripsaw has fewer teeth per inch, typically 5 to 7 TPI, with teeth filed at a near-vertical angle. This allows each tooth to act as a chisel, lifting out wood fibers ahead of the kerf rather than shearing them. A crosscut saw, by contrast, uses finer teeth at acute angles to sever fibers. Modern ripping is almost always done with a table saw or band saw, where the blade runs continuously and the operator feeds the stock forward. Hand ripping with a ripsaw survives in restoration work and where power tools are impractical.
Common problems and variations
Ripped edges often require planing or sanding because the grain-parallel cut tears the wood's surface unevenly. Boards wider than a saw's capacity must be ripped in multiple passes or with a longer blade. Angled rips (cutting at a diagonal to the grain) split the difference in difficulty between ripping and crosscutting. Ripping thick or resinous stock like pine generates considerable sawdust and heat; poorly maintained saw teeth cause the wood to burn along the kerf.
The term derives from the verb "rip," meaning to tear or split. In woodworking, it distinguishes the specific tearing action along grain from the more general sense of cutting. Ripping is the inverse of sawing across the grain; both are fundamental operations, but ripping is generally faster and produces less powdery waste because the cut follows the wood's weakest structural axis.
