The process of breaking down a colored image into its component colors in order for it to be printed.

Color separation is the technical process of decomposing a full-color photograph or artwork into distinct color channels so that each can be printed as a separate layer of ink. In traditional offset and flexographic printing, a single press run cannot lay down multiple colors simultaneously at full saturation, so the image must first be divided into individual color plates, each carrying one ink. This separation allows the press to build the full color image through successive passes or unit stations.

The most common separation method uses the CMYK model: cyan, magenta, yellow, and black (key). These four inks, when printed in register (perfectly aligned) and at varying dot sizes, can recreate the majority of visible colors through subtractive color mixing. A skilled color separator adjusts the dot percentages for each ink to match the original artwork. Digital color separation now uses software that converts RGB image data into CMYK separations automatically, though manual adjustments are often needed for critical work like fine art reproduction or color-critical packaging.

The separation directly affects print quality. Under-register (misalignment) causes visible color fringing; dot gain in darker areas can muddy colors; and improper black plate positioning in shadow areas produces weak contrast. For spot colors, screen printing uses a different approach: the artwork is separated into discrete color zones, each requiring its own screen and ink station. Gravure printing sometimes uses additional separations beyond CMYK for specialty inks or extended color gamuts.

Historically, color separation was a labor-intensive craft performed by camera operators and lithographers using photographic techniques and manual retouching. A negative or positive film was created for each color channel, requiring precise masking and color correction judgment. The term reflects this mechanical origin: the image is literally separated into component parts before printing can begin. Digital workflows have compressed the process, but the principle remains: one image, multiple layers, multiple inks.
