reiteration

The form that backs or perfects paper already printed on one side.

reiteration: the second pass through the press

In sheet-fed offset printing, reiteration is the return journey of a printed sheet through the press for a second impression on its reverse side. After the first side dries or sets sufficiently, the sheet goes back through the feed mechanism to receive ink on the blank verso. This is the standard workflow for any two-sided printed product: business cards, letterheads, brochures, or book pages. The term itself comes from the Latin reiterare, meaning to repeat or do again.

The critical variable in reiteration is registration: the second impression must align precisely with the first, typically to within 0.1 mm on quality work. This requires gripper marks, pins, or vacuum registration systems to hold the sheet in an identical position each time. Gripper marks from the first pass must land outside the final trim area, or they become visible waste. The operator must also account for paper expansion or contraction due to humidity and ink absorption between passes.

The interval between first and second passes affects both registration and ink transfer. If the sheet is too wet with ink or still tacky, the grippers may slip or mark the first print. If it has dried too long in ambient air, moisture loss can cause the paper to shrink unevenly, throwing off registration on the second side. Climate control in the pressroom becomes critical when reiteration tolerances are tight.

Not all printed matter requires reiteration. Single-sided applications, large format work, or continuous-feed presses bypass the step entirely. In finishing departments, perfected sheets (both sides printed) may then undergo folding, cutting, or binding. The term perfecting itself, though sometimes used interchangeably with reiteration, more often refers to a perfecting press: a machine with two impression cylinders that prints both sides in one pass. Reiteration remains the older, simpler, and still common method on conventional offset equipment.
