compound: one engine, two pressure stages
A compound locomotive uses steam twice, first through high-pressure cylinders, then through low-pressure cylinders, extracting more work from each unit of fuel. The exhaust steam from the high-pressure side, still containing useful energy, feeds into larger low-pressure cylinders rather than venting to the atmosphere. This two-stage expansion squeezes roughly 25 to 30 percent more efficiency from the same coal or water compared to a simple locomotive.
Most compounds use a 2-2-2, 4-4-0, 4-6-0, or 4-6-2 wheel arrangement. The high-pressure cylinders (typically 15 to 18 inches in diameter) sit inside the frame near the smokebox, while the low-pressure cylinders (often 24 to 30 inches) hang outside the frame, making the locomotive longer and heavier than an equivalent simple type. Some designs used four cylinders total; others used three, with one high-pressure and two low-pressure.
Why compounds mattered and why they faded
Compounds shone on long-distance freight and passenger routes where fuel economy meant real savings. European railways adopted them widely in the early twentieth century. However, they demanded more skilled footplate crews to manage steam distribution, pilot pressure, and the inter-cylinder valving. When simple superheating improved, and when oil-firing and diesel-electric replaced steam, the maintenance burden and operational complexity of compounds outweighed their efficiency gains on shorter routes and in regions with abundant cheap coal.
The trade-off was real: a compound needed more skilled maintenance to keep the inter-cylinder piping tight and the valve gear correctly set. Any leak between high and low pressure stages crippled performance. By contrast, a well-maintained simple locomotive was more forgiving and faster to repair at a remote depot. By the 1930s, most new steam locomotives were simple types, though compounds remained in service in France, Switzerland, and on a few British rail lines into the 1960s.
The name compound refers to the compounding of expansions: the steam expands once at high pressure, then again at low pressure in the same single stroke or set of strokes, multiplying the mechanical work extracted. It is not a mixing or combining of different fuels or water sources, a common source of confusion among those first meeting the term.
