Drawgear is the assembly of components that connects a locomotive or powered railcar to the cars behind it, transmitting the pulling force needed to move the train. It sits at the front of each car and couples to the rear of the unit ahead, forming the mechanical chain that makes a consist function as a single operating unit. The basic drawgear on freight equipment typically consists of a drawbar (a rigid steel casting or forging) with a socket at its end, a coupler or coupling device (most commonly a knuckle coupler in North America), and the draft gear assembly that absorbs shock and impact.
The draft gear is the shock-absorbing element within the drawgear setup. Older systems used friction wedges or cast-iron snubbers; modern freight cars almost universally employ elastomer (rubber) elements housed in a steel channel, which compress under tension and rebound as the load fluctuates. Passenger equipment often uses different designs: some employ Heidt or similar friction-based systems, while others use spring-based absorbers. The choice depends on the service profile, since gentle acceleration over long distances requires different energy dissipation than the heavy slack-action abuse of switching operations.
Standards and variants
Drawgear design is governed by AAR (Association of American Railroads) specifications in North America, with equivalent standards in other regions. The standard knuckle coupler height on freight equipment is 32 inches above the rail. Variations exist: some cars run with full cushioning (draft gear at both ends), while others use only a drawbar. Passenger cars may have different coupler geometry and damping to preserve ride quality. Articulated units, which share bogies between sections, dispense with drawgear altogether between units but retain it at the front and rear.
Drawgear failures create serious operational and safety problems. Broken drawbars stop traffic, slack action (play in the coupling system) can cause violent jerking that breaks cargo or damages equipment, and worn draft gears lose their shock absorption, transmitting full impact loads through the consist. Rust and corrosion in wedge-based systems, compression-set in elastomers from age or heat, and deformation from side loading all gradually degrade performance. Inspectors check drawgear regularly for cracks, lost cushioning, and proper coupler face alignment.
The term drawgear survives from an era when the draw was more prominent than the coupling; it encompasses not just the coupler itself but the entire load path: drawbar, draft gear, and the pocket or housing that contains them. On a freight car, the drawgear pocket is often the most heavily reinforced section of the underframe, because the pulling stresses concentrate there. Understanding drawgear condition and type is essential when assessing whether a railcar or locomotive is suitable for a given service or train consist.
