The person who prepares the materials to be made into glass, and/or works and tempers them.

A conciator is a skilled worker responsible for weighing, blending, and preparing the raw materials that become molten glass. The role sits at the start of the glassmaking chain: before cullet, silica sand, soda ash, limestone, and specialty oxides enter the furnace, the conciator must measure them to recipe, ensure they are clean and properly sized, and often pre-mix them to promote even melting and homogeneous glass composition.

The conciator's work directly affects glass quality. Poor batching leads to stones (unmelted particles), colour variations, or refractory corrosion inside the furnace. Different glass types demand different recipes: soda-lime glass for bottles requires different proportions than borosilicate for laboratory ware, or lead crystal for decorative pieces. The conciator must read specifications precisely and maintain consistency batch to batch, often working from printed formulas or digital records that specify weight percentages down to fractions of a percent.

Batch Preparation and Material Control

Raw materials arrive as powders, granules, or lumps and must be sieved or screened to remove fines that cloud the melt or cause dusting. Moisture content matters; materials are sometimes dried before use. The conciator may also manage cullet, the recycled glass returned from the shop floor or collection, which melts faster than raw materials and saves energy. Cullet must be sorted by colour grade and inspected for contamination like ceramics, metals, or foreign glass types that ruin the batch.

In smaller workshops, the conciator may also work at the annealing oven or glory hole, tempering finished pieces by controlled cooling to relieve internal stress. This requires judgment of colour and temperature; pull too fast and the glass cracks; too slow and it remains brittle. In larger factories, these functions may split between a batch conciator and a separate annealer, but the title and core responsibility remain tied to material preparation and thermal work.

The term conciator derives from Latin conciare, to dress or prepare; it appears in glassmaking texts from the 16th century onward. The role is old because its function is fundamental: no amount of skill at the furnace or the pontil can recover glass spoiled by a careless batch. In modern industrial glassmaking, the conciator's work is now often performed or supervised by technicians using scales, computer-controlled proportioning, and batch hoppers, yet the knowledge and judgment required remain central to the trade.
