Conditioning time is the duration required for a textile sample to reach moisture and temperature equilibrium with its surrounding environment. In practice, this means placing a fabric sample in a controlled chamber at a specified temperature and relative humidity, then waiting until its weight stabilizes. The sample absorbs or releases moisture until it matches the ambient conditions, at which point it is stable enough for testing.

The standard conditioning environment in most textile labs is 20°C and 65% relative humidity, though other specifications exist depending on end-use requirements or regional standards. A typical cotton or wool sample might condition in 24 hours under these standard conditions. Synthetic fibers like polyester often condition faster, sometimes reaching equilibrium in 4 to 8 hours, while heavily constructed fabrics or thick materials can take 48 hours or longer. The thickness, fiber type, and initial moisture content of the sample all affect how quickly equilibrium arrives.

Why conditioning time matters in testing

Textile properties like tensile strength, elongation, and dimensional stability shift noticeably with moisture content. An undertested, damp sample will show different breaking strength than a properly conditioned one. This is why conditioning time is built into international standards such as ISO 139 and ASTM D1776. Buyers, manufacturers, and testing labs must condition samples before running strength tests, shrinkage evaluations, or color measurements. Skipping or shortening this step introduces error that can mask defects or inflate reported performance.

The term "conditioning" comes from the need to condition, or prepare, the sample to a known standard state before measurement. Without this standardization, test results from different labs, climates, or times of year would be incomparable. A fabric conditioned in a dry climate versus a humid one would behave differently on the testing machine, making data meaningless for contract compliance or quality control decisions.
