Calico is a plain-weave cotton cloth made from yarn spun from low-grade or mixed cotton fibers. The fabric is typically left unbleached, giving it a natural off-white or cream color, and the weave is coarse enough that the individual threads remain visible to the naked eye. The name comes from Calicut (now Kozhikode) in Kerala, India, where European traders encountered similar cloths in the 17th century. It is not a finished luxury textile but rather a utilitarian base fabric suited to everyday use and industrial application.
The production process for calico is straightforward: cotton fibers are carded and spun into yarn, then woven on a loom using a simple over-under pattern. Calico is typically woven at thread counts between 40 and 80 threads per inch, which makes it more porous and absorbent than tighter-weave fabrics like muslin or poplin. The resulting cloth feels rough to the touch and has visible texture. Many calicos are then printed with dyed patterns using screen-printing, block-printing, or roller-printing techniques; these printed calicos are often called printed calicoes in the trade and were historically a major volume product for export to Africa and Asia.
Unprinted calico remains a workhorse fabric in apparel and domestic goods production. It is used as a lining in garments, as a foundation layer in quilting, as a base for embroidery, and in home furnishings. Its low cost, durability, and ease of printing made it the dominant choice for affordable cotton clothing and household textiles from the 18th century through the mid-20th century. The fabric also takes dyes reliably when piece-dyed after weaving, making it suitable for solid-colored goods.
Calico quality varies with the cotton grade used: finer calicos are made from better staple fibers and show fewer slubs (thick, irregular spots) and less neps (small fiber tangles). Defects in calico include holes, weaving knots, and uneven tension marks. Sizing (starch or synthetic finish applied during manufacturing) affects hand and drape; over-sized calico becomes stiff and prone to cracking. Mercerized calico, which has been treated with sodium hydroxide to swell the fibers, shows improved luster and dye uptake, though this is less common in everyday calico production.
In modern mills, calico production has largely shifted to Asia, where cotton grades and labor costs favor high-volume output. The fabric remains a standard specification in technical textiles, apparel sourcing, and fashion prototyping. Designers often use unprinted calico as a test fabric (called a calico or muslin in cutting and sewing) before committing to final production runs, because its low cost and predictable behavior make it an ideal development medium.
