A container is a rigid metal box, usually steel, designed to hold cargo and be loaded onto ships, trucks, or trains without repacking the contents. The job is to protect goods during movement, allow stacking, and fit into standardized handling systems. A typical 20-foot container (TEU) measures 20 feet long, 8 feet wide, and 8 feet 6 inches tall, with an internal volume of about 1,170 cubic meters and a maximum payload around 18 tonnes. The 40-foot container (FEU) is twice the length and carries roughly 27 tonnes. Both have corner castings and twist locks that engage with the spreader bars on cranes and the corner sockets on chassis.

The sides, roof, and floor are single-skin or double-wall construction in corten steel, chosen for corrosion resistance during long sea voyages. Corrugated walls add rigidity without weight. A standard dry van has two doors at one end; refrigerated containers (reefers) include an integral powered cooling unit and are heavily insulated. Open-top containers and flat racks serve oversized cargo. High-cube variants stretch to 9 feet 6 inches tall and gain roughly 400 cubic feet of volume, useful for light bulky goods.

Containers are secured to vessel cell guides during ocean transit and lashed with steel cables or rods. On land, they move on chassis (wheeled trailers) or sit stacked on trucks and rail wagons. Corrosion is the primary wear mechanism; salt spray, trapped moisture, and repeated thermal cycling cause rust along seams and where coatings are damaged. Internal condensation (called sweat) can damage hygroscopic cargo like grain or textiles. Damaged doors, bent corner castings, and twisted floors reduce handling safety and can lead to rejection at ports, delaying shipments and triggering repair costs.

The 20-foot and 40-foot standards emerged from the 1950s standardization efforts by ISO (International Organization for Standardization) and are defined in ISO 668. These dimensions were chosen to fit railway cars, truck beds, and the cell guides in container ships economically. The name container is literal: it contains. The term gained dominance after containerization revolutionized shipping in the 1960s, replacing break-bulk cargo handling. Today, millions of containers cycle globally; tracking their location, condition, and maintenance is critical infrastructure for logistics operators.
