A container flat is a railroad car built to carry standard intermodal shipping containers, typically twenty or forty foot units. Unlike a conventional flatcar, it has a rigid skeletal frame with corner casting pockets and twist locks that secure containers in place during transit. The deck itself is minimal, often just steel or timber stringers running the length of the car, keeping weight low and payload high.

These cars come in two main configurations. Standard flats have a single level for one 40-foot container or two 20-foot containers side by side. Articulated double-stack flats, which became common in the 1980s, use connected frames with adjustable heights to carry two containers stacked vertically, doubling capacity while fitting within railway clearance limits. The twist locks automatically engage when a container is lowered onto the pockets, and manual or pneumatic release systems free them at the destination.

Container flats operate in dedicated intermodal trains that run fixed schedules between ports, inland terminals, and distribution centers. A single train might handle 75 to 100 loaded containers, with each flat carrying standardized ISO containers that have the same footprint and locking mechanism. The cars are designed for rapid loading and unloading using overhead gantry cranes or ground-based equipment at specialized terminals.

Wear and failure points

The corner castings take significant stress from container weight and braking forces. Cracks develop in the cast steel where the pockets anchor, especially on articulated units where frame flexing is greater. Twist locks can corrode or jam if not properly maintained, creating safety hazards during loading. Deck timbers rot or split, and the steel frame itself needs regular paint to prevent rust that weakens joints.

The name reflects the car's function straightforwardly: a flat platform specifically designed for containers. These have largely replaced traditional flatcars for long-distance intermodal freight because they reduce handling steps and protect containers during rail movement, keeping transit times predictable and damage rates low.
