A control car is an unpowered railroad car fitted with a full operating cabin, allowing a train operator to control and drive a train from the rear end without requiring a locomotive at that end. The car carries all the essential equipment found in a locomotive cab: throttle, brake valve, sanders, horn, headlight, and marker lights. It connects to the train's pneumatic brake system and electrical circuits so commands issued from the control car transmit to the motive power at the front.

Control cars eliminate the need to turn a locomotive around or run it light back down the line after reaching a terminal. This saves fuel, reduces wear on motive power, and speeds turnaround time. They are common in commuter rail, shortline, and industrial switching operations where trains regularly operate in both directions. The operator has full visibility forward through the cabin windows and can control consist speed, air brakes, dynamic braking (if available), and all lighting systems as if driving from the locomotive itself.

Construction and Systems

A control car is typically built on a standard freight or passenger car frame with a reinforced crew cabin mounted at one end. The cabin sits high enough to provide adequate forward sightlines over the train. Weight distribution and coupler strength must accommodate pulling loads in reverse. The car carries control cables or hardwire circuits that run through the train to reach the locomotive, and modern versions often include radio-remote control backup systems. Battery boxes power the cabin lights and control circuits when the locomotive is not supplying power.

Control cars work best on routes where the locomotive will always be at the opposite end of the consist. They are not suitable for operations requiring the locomotive to uncouple mid-route, nor for very long trains where signal transmission becomes problematic. On freight lines, they see less use than in passenger or transit operations because freight locomotives are more readily repositioned. The term is sometimes confused with a cab car, which is a powered or unpowered passenger car with a driver's cabin but designed primarily for passenger service rather than control of freight consists.
