The lowest gear on a vehicle: especially, a dedicated super-low gear, available in some trucks and tractors, that is even lower than the usual low gear, which is labeled as first gear.

Creeper gear: ultra-low reduction for maximum pulling power

A creeper gear is an additional reduction stage built into a truck or tractor transmission that sits below first gear, delivering torque multiplication far beyond what a conventional low range offers. While first gear might provide a 3:1 or 4:1 ratio, creeper gear typically achieves ratios of 10:1 to 20:1 or steeper, slowing the vehicle to a walking pace while multiplying engine torque at the wheels. This is genuine mechanical advantage: if your engine produces 400 foot-pounds of torque, a 15:1 creeper ratio delivers 6,000 foot-pounds at the axle before the differential adds its own multiplication.

Creeper gears are most common in heavy-duty trucks designed for construction, logging, or mining, and in agricultural tractors working in extreme conditions. They are typically engaged by a separate lever or selector switch, either as a standalone gate in the shifter or as an auxiliary transmission component. Heavy-duty manual transmissions may include a creeper splitter that divides first gear further. Some modern torque converters and automatic transmissions integrate creeper ratios electronically, engaging them only when the vehicle is nearly stopped or when the operator requests maximum pulling force.

The practical problem they solve: without creeper gear, a heavily loaded truck or fully-loaded trailer on soft ground, mud, or extreme grades can break traction before it builds momentum. The wheels spin or the vehicle stalls rather than crawling forward with maximum bite. Creeper gear trades speed for relentless pulling power, letting the vehicle inch ahead at engine speeds where torque is high and wheel slip is minimized. A logger extracting a winch load or a farmer pulling a combine from a bog depends on this gear.

The name comes from the verb: to creep. The vehicle creeps forward at speeds sometimes measured in inches per minute, not miles per hour. On some older manual transmissions, creeper ratios were so low that drivers had to use hand throttle or engine braking to prevent dangerous acceleration; modern vehicles with engine governors handle this automatically.

Creeper gear is distinct from low range, which is a secondary stage available in two-speed transfer cases or auxiliary transmissions on 4-wheel-drive vehicles. A truck may have both: low range in the transfer case for all-terrain work, plus creeper gear in the main transmission for extreme loads. Not all vehicles have creeper gear, and its presence or absence is a key specification when buying for heavy pulling work.
