Convertible husbandry is a farming system in which fields alternate between arable cultivation and grass pasture over a multi-year cycle. A field might grow cereal or root crops for three to five years, then be sown to grass leys (temporary pastures) for another three to five years before being ploughed back to arable. This rotation uses the same land for both crops and livestock without permanent separation into distinct pasture and arable holdings.

The practice gained prominence in 17th-century England and Low Countries agriculture as a way to maintain soil fertility without heavy reliance on purchased manure or nitrogen inputs. Livestock grazing the leys deposit dung and urine, rebuilding organic matter and available nitrogen. When the pasture phase ends and the field is ploughed out, the soil enters the arable phase already enriched. The rotation reduces pest and disease pressure on continuous cereal growing, and spreads both labour and machinery use across the year.

Ley composition and rotation cycles

A ley typically contains grasses such as perennial ryegrass, timothy, or cocksfoot, often mixed with clover or other legumes. The inclusion of legumes further boosts nitrogen availability. Ley duration depends on soil type, intended livestock use, and market prices for grain versus beef or milk. Lighter soils may support only short leys of two to three years before reversion to arable; heavy clay soils can sustain longer pasture phases. The entire cycle, from arable back to arable, might span six to ten years or longer.

Convertible husbandry demands integrated planning: farmers must match livestock numbers to ley productivity, time cultivation operations around grass establishment and growth, and manage soil structure through the repeated plough-and-seed cycle. Failure to establish good grass cover in newly sown leys, or early loss to poaching by heavy grazing, can break the rotation and waste the arable year of fertility building. Conversely, summer droughts can reduce ley productivity, forcing supplementary feeding and limiting the manure return from grazing.

The system fell from favour in the mid-20th century as artificial nitrogen fertiliser became cheap and tractors made mechanised arable farming faster and more profitable. Modern organic and regenerative farming systems, however, have revived interest in convertible husbandry principles because they rebuild soil structure and reduce chemical inputs. Mixed farms with both crops and livestock still use variants of the approach, though often on a shorter cycle or with grass kept separate by field fencing and purchased feed.
