costeaning

A process for discovering metallic lodes by sinking small pits through the superficial deposits to the solid rock, and then driving from one pit to another across the direction of the vein, so as to cross all the veins between the two pits.

Costeaning is a prospecting method where miners sink a series of small vertical shafts, typically 1 to 3 metres deep, through surface overburden and soil to reach bedrock. Once the pit bottoms are at solid rock, horizontal galleries or short tunnels are driven between adjacent pits, cutting perpendicular to the suspected strike direction of ore veins. This cross-cutting allows prospectors to intersect veins without sinking expensive deep shafts blindly.

The technique is particularly useful in areas with significant weathered overburden where surface geological mapping alone cannot reliably locate subsurface mineralization. By forcing the crosscuts at right angles to potential vein trends (often determined by surface exposure, float samples, or magnetic surveys), miners ensure they will encounter any steeply inclined or near-vertical veins running through the area. The spoil from the shafts and the rock broken in the crosscuts provide material for assay sampling, directly testing whether ore-grade material lies below.

Why costeaning, not deep shafting

Before committing capital to a main shaft that may strike nothing, costeaning reduces financial risk. A network of 10 to 20 shallow pits and connecting crosscuts costs far less than sinking a shaft 20 metres or deeper, yet provides high-confidence geological information. Once a vein is intersected and confirmed to carry payable ore, permanent shaft positions and depths can be decided with real data. The method was standard in hardrock mining regions including Cornwall, Wales, and later in colonial Australian and African goldfields.

The spacing and layout of costeaning pits depend on vein orientation estimates and the width of the target area. Closer pits (say 10 to 20 metres apart) increase the probability of intersecting narrow veins but raise labour costs; wider spacing covers ground faster but risks missing thin lodes. Crosscut length is similarly variable, though rarely exceeding 30 metres, since the goal is efficient intersection rather than full vein exposure.

Modern costeaning is less common due to advances in geophysical prospecting, drilling technology, and 3D modelling, which can now map subsurface structures with less ground disturbance. However, in remote areas, on small claims, or where initial drill results are ambiguous, the method retains value as a low-cost tactile way to ground-truth ore occurrence and gather bulk samples for metallurgical testing.
