A costean is a narrow trench cut through solid rock, typically 3 to 6 feet wide and driven horizontally or at a steep angle into a hillside or outcrop. The trench is interrupted at regular intervals by vertical or near-vertical shafts, called pits, that allow workers to descend and extract samples or continue excavation at depth. The purpose is simple: to cut across the strike of suspected mineral veins so that the ore bodies are exposed in cross-section, revealing their width, grade, and orientation without committing to a full underground mine.

Costeaning was the standard prospecting method before modern drilling technology. A miner or exploration team would see an outcrop or geological indication suggesting ore nearby, then drive a costean across the likely path of the vein. The pits allowed workers to sample continuously as they went deeper, and if ore was found, further pits could be sunk to trace the vein laterally. In hardrock mining, a costean might run 50 to 200 feet in length before the operator decided whether a proper shaft and decline were justified.

The work was physically demanding and dangerous. Driving a costean through granite, slate, or other hard rock required hand tools, later supplemented by pneumatic hammers or small charges of black powder. Ventilation in the connecting pits was often poor, and the pits themselves were prone to collapse, flooding, or gas accumulation. A costean required constant timbering to prevent cave-ins, and the spoil had to be hauled out regularly. Because a costean intersects the rock at an angle, water would collect in the lower sections and had to be bailed or pumped.

The term itself is Cornish in origin, from "coste" or "cost," referring to a rib of ore or a vein exposed in this way. Costeaning was particularly common in the tin and copper mines of Cornwall and Devon from the 16th century onward, and the method was adopted worldwide by hard-rock prospectors. Although drilling and geophysical surveys have largely replaced costeaning in professional exploration, the trench-and-pit method is still occasionally used in artisanal or small-scale mining operations where access to drilling equipment is limited.

A successful costean confirms not only the presence of ore but also its thickness and orientation. A barren costean, by contrast, rules out a prospect and saves the operator from sinking an expensive shaft. In historical records and geological reports, costean workings are often visible as linear scars on hillsides, sometimes still traceable after centuries, and they remain a key piece of evidence in understanding where historical mining activity took place.
