A coupon is a small coupon of material, extracted or prepared from a production batch or environment, designed to undergo destructive testing while representing the failure behavior of the full-scale component or assembly. Unlike a witness sample kept for reference, a coupon is deliberately loaded, corroded, heated, or stressed to failure so that engineers can predict how the actual product will perform under the same conditions.
Coupons are cut from the same stock, heat-treated in the same batch, and oriented in the same direction as the finished part whenever possible. A tensile coupon for aluminum might be 0.5 inches wide and 2 to 3 inches long, with gauge marks scribed at known spacing so elongation can be measured during breaking. For fatigue testing, a coupon retains the critical stress concentration, surface finish, or weld detail that the design needs to validate.
The geometry matters immensely. A smooth, polished coupon will survive far more stress cycles than a rough-surfaced or notched one, yet the notched coupon is the truthful test: it reflects what the casting or forging will actually do in service. Corrosion coupons are often flat strips immersed in salt spray or buried underground for months; the weight loss and pit depth reveal how fast the material will degrade in the customer's environment.
Coupons versus full-scale qualification
Testing coupons is cheaper, faster, and safer than running a production part to destruction. A turbine blade coupon can be spun to burst in hours; the actual engine cannot. Welds are qualified by coupon bend tests and hardness surveys rather than by cutting up expensive assemblies. When a material batch arrives, coupons are tested before parts are machined, catching problems early.
The word coupon comes from the French couper, to cut, and traditionally referred to a detached portion or ticket. In metallurgy and materials science, it retained that sense: a piece cut off for inspection. Standards such as ASTM E8 and E466 specify coupon dimensions, surface preparation, and test procedures so that results from one lab can be compared to another and to historical data.
