rig: to outfit machinery for a specific task or load

To rig is to assemble, arrange, or equip machinery, structural elements, or a workspace so it can perform a particular job. In manufacturing, rigging means configuring equipment with the right hardware, attachments, guards, or supports before operation begins. A press might be rigged with a specific die set and feeder mechanism. A crane might be rigged with slings, shackles, and spreader bars suited to a particular load. The term crosses industries: textile workers rig looms with specific yarn guides; fabricators rig welding tables with clamps and fixtures.

The actual work of rigging varies greatly by context. In heavy lifting, rigging involves calculating load capacity, selecting wire rope or webbing, attaching hardware to the load, and securing attachment points to the lifting device. The rigger must ensure the center of gravity is understood and balanced. In machine setup, rigging might mean installing tooling, adjusting stops and guides, mounting guards, and running test cycles. Each configuration is temporary: once the job is done or the load is moved, components are often removed or reconfigured for the next task.

Rigging errors are serious. Underestimating load weight, using worn or corroded hardware, failing to secure attachment points, or miscalculating angles causes equipment failure, product damage, and injury. Wire rope rated for 5 tons cannot safely carry a 6-ton load. A spreader bar angled too steeply concentrates stress at the tips. Slings must be inspected for cuts, abrasion, and chemical damage. Documentation matters: a rigging plan should be recorded and reviewed, not improvised on the spot.

The word itself comes from nautical practice, where rigging referred to the ropes, lines, and tackle needed to operate a sailing vessel. The analogy held: both contexts demand temporary assembly of multiple components to accomplish a task, with failure modes that endanger people and cargo. Modern rigging in manufacturing inherits both the vocabulary and the discipline of that maritime tradition.

Riggers are a distinct skill category in many shops and construction firms. They need knowledge of material strength, geometry, weight estimation, fastener selection, and load distribution. Lifting operations over six meters or involving unusual loads often require a certified rigger and a written rigging plan in jurisdictions with formal safety codes.
