A cross-halving joint, also called a halved cross joint, is formed when two pieces of timber intersect at right angles and each piece has half its thickness removed where they overlap. The result is a flat, interlocking connection where the two pieces sit flush to one another, sharing the same plane on both faces. This creates a strong mechanical lock without requiring fasteners, though nails or dowels are often added for reinforcement.
The joint begins with precise marking. The width of one timber is marked across the other; then the depth (half the thickness) is marked on both pieces. Both timbers are then cut with a saw, typically a tenon saw, to remove the central half-thickness section within the marked area. The cuts must be square and parallel, or the joint will rock. Chisels are used to clean out the waste and pare the shoulders flat. If either piece is slightly too tight, it can be planed down, but if it is too loose, the joint is compromised.
This joint appears in intermediate framework where timbers cross but need to remain coplanar and strong. It is common in roof trusses, structural bracing, and lattice frames. It handles load transfer reasonably well because the mechanical interlock prevents one piece from sliding over the other under lateral stress. The flat faces also make it suitable for work where a clean visual appearance matters, since the joint sits flush rather than offset.
Cross-halving joints weaken both timbers at the point of intersection because material is removed from each. The effective depth of each piece is reduced to half its original thickness in the joint area. This is acceptable for secondary members and light to moderate loads, but for heavily loaded primary structural timbers, alternatives like mortise and tenon or bolted connections may be preferred. The joint is also vulnerable to splitting if the grain runs unfavourably across the cut shoulders.
The joint's name is literal: the two pieces halve one another by removing half their thickness, and they meet at a cross. It is distinct from a corner halving joint, where timbers meet at the corner of a frame, or from an end halving joint, where one timber sits partially across the end of another. The cross-halving remains a standard detail in traditional carpentry and is still used in modern work where aesthetic finish and material efficiency justify the hand work required to cut it accurately.
