A cross-platform interchange is a passenger transfer between two trains that are berthed simultaneously on opposite sides of the same island platform. The platform sits between two parallel tracks, with one train on each side, allowing passengers to step directly across the platform surface rather than exiting to street level and re-entering a separate station building or navigating overhead passages. This arrangement minimizes walking distance and transfer time, making it operationally efficient for busy route junctions.

Cross-platform interchanges depend on precise scheduling and coordinated dwell times. Both trains must arrive within a short window of each other, typically two to five minutes, and hold their passengers long enough for the transfer to complete. Rail operators call this a cross-platform connection and it requires timetable coordination between separate train operators when they run services to different destinations. Where the two services have different operators, contractual agreements specify minimum connection times.

Layout and constraints

Island platforms are standard on modern rapid transit systems and commuter rail networks where space permits. Each platform must be wide enough to accommodate the passenger surge during interchange, usually 10 to 14 metres for high-frequency services. Safety depends on clear sightlines and tactile paving: platform edges must be marked with yellow warning strips and tactile guidance for visually impaired passengers. Gaps between train and platform edge typically range from 50 to 200 millimetres depending on rolling stock and track geometry.

Cross-platform interchanges fail when trains are delayed or when platform crowding prevents rapid turnover. Overcrowded platforms during peak hours can exceed safe capacity; passengers waiting to board one train block those exiting from the other. Poor signage confuses new passengers about which side serves which destination. Some systems add real-time display screens on both sides of the island to show train numbers, destinations, and delay status.

The term is most common in British and Australian railway terminology. North American systems often use cross-platform transfer or simply refer to it by station name. The economics favour cross-platform design: removing one island platform and replacing it with two separate side platforms doubles station footprint and construction cost while halving transfer convenience.
