CS: voice calls through dedicated phone lines

Circuit switching is a method of routing telephone calls and data by establishing a dedicated physical path between two endpoints for the duration of the connection. When you dial a number on a traditional telephone, the switching equipment at the exchange physically connects your line to the destination line through a series of switches and cables, creating an unbroken circuit. This circuit remains open and reserved solely for your call until you hang up, regardless of whether you are actively speaking or there is silence on the line.

The key characteristic of CS networks is their predictability. Once the circuit is established, the caller receives a guaranteed bandwidth and quality of service. There is no competition for resources mid-call, no variable latency, and no packets getting lost or arriving out of order. This made circuit switching the dominant technology for voice telephony throughout the twentieth century. The Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) is fundamentally a circuit-switched infrastructure, though many carriers have begun transitioning to packet-based systems like VoIP.

How circuit switching differs from packet switching

Packet switching, by contrast, breaks data into small chunks, labels them with destination addresses, and sends them through shared network paths. Multiple users can share the same links because packets from different calls or connections interleave. Packet switching is more efficient for bursty data (like email or web browsing) but introduces variable delay and potential congestion. CS guarantees low, consistent latency, which matters for real-time voice conversation. The tradeoff is that circuit switching is wasteful when the line sits idle, whereas packet networks can reallocate unused capacity.

Modern telecommunications blur this distinction. Calls on 4G LTE or 5G networks are actually packet-switched end-to-end, but the networks apply quality-of-service rules to mimic circuit-switched behavior for voice. ISDN (Integrated Services Digital Network) offered both circuit and packet services on the same infrastructure. Many enterprises still maintain hybrid systems in which older PBX equipment runs on circuitswitched trunks while newer IP systems run on packet networks.

The term CS appears in technical standards and network diagrams whenever the conversation involves switching technology, telephony infrastructure, or network architecture. You will encounter it in documentation for legacy telephone systems, in discussions of fallback mechanisms (some mobile networks revert to CS voice when packet quality degrades), and in transition planning as carriers decommission older switching centers. Understanding CS is essential for anyone working with telecom infrastructure, network migration projects, or systems that must interoperate with both traditional and modern telephone networks.
